Chapter 9.

QUESTIONS

I was at Jezebella’s house Thursday morning as soon as Gnarly left for work. It was colder than yesterday and continual rain had made the pavement slippery. Jezebella came bounding out of the house, raised her arm to wave and straightaway slipped on the icy walkway, landing on her butt with her feet splayed out in front of her.

“Are you okay?” I asked as I stood by and patiently waited for her to get up. “Did you hurt yourself?”

“I’m fine. I’m not usually so inept.”

“Actually, you are.”

“I’m such an uncoordinated klutz,” Jezebella sighed.

“You know, you would be totally graceful and coordinated if you were a vampire,” I observed.

“Forget about it, Edwin. It’s not going to happen.”

I carried Jezebella’s book bag to her car and opened the door for her. She jumped in and started the car, revving the engine as I walked around to my side. We catapulted into the street like an F-16 fighter jet. Jezebella loved speed and we flew through town like a flaming meteor. The wild ride to school was mercifully short and I needed the barf bag only once. We roared into the parking lot and skidded neatly into a parking space created when the car knocked a bicycle rack out of the way. Mid-semester exams were being given today and we would not have time to talk much during the school day. I was already looking forward to lunch.

“I’ll see you later,” I said as I got out of the car. “Good luck on your exams.”

“Thanks. I’ll see you later,” she replied as we made our way into the building. “Good luck on your exams, Edwin.”

The morning passed uneventfully. Since I had been through high school and college so many times, my exams were no challenge at all and I was always the first to finish. I love how that makes everyone jealous and resentful of me. I was already seated in the cafeteria when Jezebella arrived and I waved her over to my table.

“Hello,” I said. “How have your exams been so far?”

“Math and English were brutal,” Jezebella replied. “Numbers and words are so tricky for me.”

“How was gym? You didn’t push anyone into the pool today, did you?”

“I did not push Coach Hardwicke into the pool. She just happened to fall in as I was passing. It’s not my fault,” Jezebella answered quite defensively.

“Okay. Relax. I almost believe you. Have a root beer and an oatmeal cookie,” I offered, pushing my tray toward her.

“Thanks, I am hungry. By the way, I’ve decided to go out for sports.”

“Sports, really?”

“Yes, I joined the volleyball team.”

“That’s awesome, Jezebella. I heard that you have a mean spike.”

“I’m really excited to make the team. They wouldn’t let me play anything at my school in Phoenix.”

“Congratulations and good luck,” I said. “Jezebella, not to change the subject, but I’ve been meaning to ask if you had any boyfriends when you lived in Phoenix?”

“Only one, and for just a short time. His name was James.”

“Interesting. Do you have
